Photographing Children

I spent the evening with my photography friends in the presence of children models. We all congregated at Monument valley park in the gardens along with a guest photographer from New Jersey. Fabulous time! Fabulous shots! Fabulous kids!The one thing I can say for sure as a children's photographer . . . you must go with the flow and be ready to shoot at any time. The younger the child, the less attention span he/she has. The older ones can be molded into any modeling pose, for the most part. They love to be photographed.

The evening was winding down and I decided that the sun, which had been my light source, was rapidly depleting. So what did I do? You guessed it...bump up my ISO to let more light in and open up my aperture a bit wider. You have to be careful with the ISO as to not bump up too high in case you were asked to enlarge one of these fabulous portraits. It would produce much more grain than one that was shot at a lower ISO.

Have fun photographing children, I sure do!

I spent a couple hours carousing downtown with my friend Jana; our cameras strapped to our necks as I taught her how to better manipulate her camera. Fun times!

We ended at Riccos for pizza, salad and a glass of red wine.

I have to tell you, the thing that I made so clear to her was to take the camera out of automatic. Put it into AV mode (aperture priority) in the manual setting section. You, as the photographer, have so much more control over the light that falls on your subject, whether it be a person or a glass of wine.

The smaller the number, the larger the opening, more light hits your subject. That's a good tip to know in a low light situation. You can also bump up your ISO for additional light.

So, remember F/16 when it is sunny...F/8 or F/11 when cloudy...A wide open aperture like F/1.8/4.5/5.6 is great for indoors. Again, remember...bump up your ISO when your indoor--that will allow more light in as well.

Flooding waters

On the very same day I was chased from capturing images of Brenda, I drove home only to be greeted by a nasty storm. I veered off the highway taking the back way home, and came across this image. I had to stop and take a picture. The image is a small stream that runs behind Wendys on Chestnut and Garden of the Gods. It was running to rapidly due to the storm, it couldn't get it all in under the bridge...the result was an overflowing river. Crazy, huh?

This is beautiful Brenda. She came to visit (friend) Aunt Heather. I headed down to Heather's house with my camera hoping to photograph this sweet girl. We gathered our "stuff", jumped in the car, and half way down the street we discovered the storm that was clearly off to the West and South was heading our way. We turned around and headed back to grandma's house where we were fortunate enough to capture a couple images. She primped for her shoot (though she didn't have to... her beautiful blond hair and sparkly eyes told the story). Thanks Brenda for a fun...10 minutes!

Always have your camera ready and carry spare batteries with you. A great piece of advice a fabulous photographer once gave me was to use a polarizing filter on your lens. It will enhance color and contrast on sunny days.

Summer Fun

What is it about summer that makes you want to jump into the water, and get your feet wet. We spent the day at America the Beautiful park. Jasmine, Jennifer, Christine, and me. Getting ourselves all wet. Happy, busy children everywhere--splashing. Oh it felt good though, on a hot day like today.
A soft breeze, cool water and the blistering hot sun, all created a summer like atmosphere. Don't forget to scrapbook your summer fun. I'd suggest an album for summer only. Add to it every year and you will see how the kids grow. It'll help you remember all the summer activities you're involved with each year.

Summertime, Summertime, Sum, Sum, Summertime...remember the song? Why not remember the fun times in the sun by scrapbooking them.

Very Cool Site...

I've discovered the coolest site for us "photographers" and scrapbookers. Whether you're an amateur or professional this site allows lots of editing pieces. It even allows you to email the pic to whomever, send the pic to your facebook, myspace or your picassa site. It creates frames, you can add text to the picture, stickers, special effects.

Oh wait there's more... scrapbook pages and greeting cards can be made. You can make collage pages, and even have them printed right from the site. Check out how I rotated the picture to add special effect to it.

If you want you can upgrade to the premium package (which I intend to do) for only $24.95 a year.

The Cross

I haven't posted in a while, thought it was time. I've been so busy with life that photography has taken a back seat.

This photograph reminds me that no matter which glass you look through, God is always there. When he closes a door he opens a window. I see the cross reflecting through this window. It's an illusion of course; it's a street pole. However, a cross is a cross.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness

I am aware that breast cancer can strike women in their twenties, thirties, forties, fifties and sixties. Early detection through our yearly mammograms are so important to our well being.

My mother is a breast cancer survivor, and was diagnosed through her yearly mammogram.

I am part of an organization to help women and their families have memories through photography. Our mission is to support the cause and celebrate life. Well, friends, I haven't posted any new pictures lately, but that doesn't mean I haven't been taking any... I have!! Lots of them, in fact I just bought myself a new lense; 28-135mm... Fabulous!! It's been fun and entertaining to see what this fast IS lens can do. For some, it's a lens for portrait photography, in my case that was the reason for the lens. A picture of Ashley is posted; beautiful Ashley. A senior with an attitude; gotta love that...

Flowers hang along the fence at the townhomes in Rockrimmon that had burned to the ground. Ashes lye where homes were. Burned mattresses and a lone cell phone are present in the rubble. Families homeless due to a tragic event not known to the public. Memories lost in the aftermath. Families having to make other arrangements in hope of their home being rebuilt.

These were material posessions, but for some, memories... It can all be taken within seconds; for these people 1 hour. How sad and for what? We'll never know...

It's March... Can you believe it's spring already? What do we think of when we think of spring? Birds, snow melting, things budding, grass turning green... any other thoughts?

We recently had a discussion on expressing ourselves through our lenses. How can you express yourself through your lense? When you take a picture how does it make you feel when you look at it? Excited, passionate, beautiful, joy, in awe.... Try capturing an image that makes you feel something when you look at it.. Here's mine.. I am in awe of this beautiful little granddaughter of mine...

Decorating Project

Well, I have finally redecorated our guest room, formally our daughter's room... I spent the morning painting the room a refreshing green color, then went shopping.... Fun? Yes, it was. We decorated it in green, brown and gold... I have added pics so you can see this room.. Let me know what you think. Pictures say 1000 words, don't you agree? We decided to go downtown and took a picture of a street lamp attached to the side of an old building. Perfect! I needed that one element for my room. A Black & White shot it became, dressed in a black frame and a black mat, against the green wall. Pop, it went....

I challenge you to to take a picture and make it part of your special room... How artwork adds drama to a space is what photography is all about.

Winter Scape

Well, here we are in February already, can you believe it? The snow is so beautiful; it creates quite the picture when resting on the branches. This was taken right outside my window.

When taking pictures where the sun is harsh, remember your images will appear overexposed. So I try to take advantage of the overcast days where the sun isn't so obvious.

Our Starbucks Terminology

Ok, this doesn't really have anything to do with photography, but the picture sums up where we were...

My honey and I decided that a trip to Starbucks was in the agenda for the day. As we mosied up to the counter, we ordered our favorites; a soy chai for me and a non-fat, no foam latte for him. We found our table to enjoy our beverages at when Dale looks at me and says, "Did I just hear him order a Vroom?" A vroom? I said.

Next time you find yourself in the mood for some great coffee at Starbucks, order yourself a Vroom; Verona coffee with room for cream....

January 1st Picture...

January is a cold time of year where we find ourselves wrapped up in blankets by the fireplace. A hot bowl of oatmeal, snow covered pinecones hanging from a pine tree, and animals that linger in the new fallen snow are all a part of winter. The sun can be pretty harsh at times during winter due to the glare of the sun against the snow. These images will appear overexposed. So, I like to take advantage of the overcast days where the sun isn't so high in the sky and the glare isn't so bright.

The photo I chose was of a pinecone, covered with new fallen snow, hanging on a pine tree. I love this picture and seem to take a new one each year; of course, it doesn't change any because it comes from the same tree.

Always remember, when taking pictures in the snow, keep your camera away from the moisture; a great way to ruin it. Also carry extra batteries with you because the coldness will run your batteries lower than normal, very quickly.
